The purpose of this LTC is to advise you of two recent awards that Fire Chief Floyd Jordan
has received.
The Mayor's Black Host Committee selected Chief Jordan as the Public Servant of the
Year at their Black History Month Celebration held on February 26. This celebration
honored different individuals from the community who have contributed to improving the
quality of life for African-Americans on Miami Beach and throughout South Florida.
Miami-Dade College has inducted Chief Jordan into their Hall of Fame. Chief Jordan
becomes only the second person to be inducted in the public safety category. David
Paulison, the former Miami-Dade County Fire Chief and current U.S. Fire Administrator
was the first.
Chief Jordan's selection for both these awards is based on his long and distinguished
career as a flrefighter and his many accomplishments throughout his career. Some of
these accomplishments include the fact that Chief Jordan became the first African-
American firefighter in South Flodda to be promoted through the ranks by competitive
examination. In the City of Miami, he was promoted to the following ranks: Fire
Lieutenant, Fire Captain, Chief Fire Officer, Division Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief. In
1996, Chief Jordan was appointed Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Miami Beach,
becoming the City's first African-American fire officer. In 1999, Chief Jordan was
appointed Fire Chief for the City of Miami Beach, becoming the first African-American fire
chief in Miami-Dade County.

and privilege to inform you that you have been chosen for induction into the 2004 MDC Hall
of Fame for your outstanding contributions to our community in the field of Public Safety.
On Thursday, April 29, 2004, the 2nd Annual Miami Dade College Alumni Hall of Fame
Awards dinner will continue the tradition of recognizing the accomplishments of MDC
alumni. The event serves two purposes: to honor our best; and raise funds for scholarships
for worthy students like you.

and an acceptance form. Last year, close to one thousand people attended the inaugural
event.

BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE
FLOYD JORDAN
Born in Madison, Georgia, May 16, 1943. Has been a Miami-Dade County resident for
the past 57 years. Attended Dade County Schools, graduating from George Washington
Carver High School in 1962.
Joined the United States Air Force in 1962 and received training at Greenville Air Force
Base in Greenville, Mississippi as a Fire Protection Specialist. Served nearly four years in
the Air Force, including one year in the Republic of Vietnam.
Joined the City of Miami Fire Depaximent in March 1967. Promoted through the ranks by
competitive examination, finishing in the top five on all promotional registers. With each
promotion Floyd Jordan became the first Black in South Florida to be promoted to the
following ranks;
1. Fire Lieutenant
2. Fire Captain
3. Chief Fire Officer
4. Division Fire Chief
5. Deputy Fire Chief
Appointed as Fire Chief of the City of Boynton Beach Fire Department in January, 1994
becoming the first Black Boynton Beach Fire Chief and Department Director. Served
more than 2 ½ years. Appointed as Assistant Fire Chief in the City of Miami Beach in
August, 1996 becoming the first Black Fire Officer in the City of Miami Beach.
Appointed as City of Miami Beach Fire Chief in June, 1999 becoming the first Black Fire
Chief in Miami-Dade County.
Attended Miami-Dade Community College, graduating with honors in 1978 with two
Associate Degrees, one degree in Fire Service Administration, and the other in Fire
Science and Technology. Attended the National Fire Academy, completing several
courses, including Executive Development III.
Received many commendations, awards and recognition throughout his fire service
career, including the United States Air Force Commendation Medal for firefighting
actions in the Republic of Vietnam, in 1996 City of Miami fire station#12 dedicated in
honor of retired Deputy Fire Chief Floyd Jordan, in 1994 honored by the City of Opa
Locka with Proclamation "Mr. Floyd Jordan Day", in 1996 honored by the City of Miami
with Proclamation "Chief Floyd Jordan Day", in 1996 honored by the City of Boynton
Beach with Proclamation "Chief Floyd Jordan Day", in 2004 honored by Miami Dade
College as a member of the MDC Hall of Fame.
CAREER MILE STONES
1. Hired by the City of Miami in 1967 and promoted by competitive examinations to
the ranks of Fire Lieutenant, Fire Captain, and Chief Fire Officer. With each
promotion became the first black in the State of Florida to attain those ranks.
2. Appointed to the position of Division Fire Chief in 1982 and Deputy Fire Chief in
1984. With each appointment became the first Black in the State of Florida to
attain those ranks.
3. In 1994 retired from the City of Miami and appointed as Fire Chief in the City of
Boynton Beach, Florida, becoming Boynton Beach's first Black Fire Chief and
Department Director.
4. In 1996 resigned as Fire Chief in Boynton Beach and appointed as the first Black
Assistant Fire Chief in the City of Miami Beach.
5. Resigned as Assistant Fire Chief in November 1998, and returned in June 1999 as
the Fire Chief, becoming the first Black Fire Chief in Miami-Dade County.
6. Honor of picture being placed on Miami-Dade College Billboard
7. Honor of being recognized by the Miami Beach Sun Post in April, 2002 as one of
the Top 50 individuals having an impact on our community.
8. In February, 1996 the City of Miami dedicated new Fire Station#12 in the honor
of retired Deputy Fire Chief Floyd Jordan.
9. In the aftemiath of the Night Club fire tragedy in Rhode Island in 2003, was
interviewed on the NATIONAL T.V. PROGRAM 60 MINUTES II regarding
night club inspections and fire sprinkler systems.
10. Recognized as an "Outstanding Graduate" by Miami-Dade Community College at
a commencement ceremony in 1989.
11. Honor of being selected to the Miami-Dade College Hall of Fame
12. Received Air Force Commendation Medal for firefighting actions in the Republic
of Viet Nam.
13. Served 3 years and 7 months in the U.S. Air Force as a Fire Protection Specialist.
14. Honored by the City of Miami with a Proclamation "Chief Floyd Jordan Day" in
February 1996.
15. Honored by the City ofOpa locka with a Proclamation "Mr. Floyd Jordan Day" in
February 1994.
