A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA URGING THE
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
METROPOLITAN DADE COUNTY TO CONTINUE
DISCUSSIONS AND NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE CITY
TOWARD THE FUNDING, DEVELOPMENT, AND
CONSTRUCTION OF A REGIONAL LIBRARY IN THE CITY
OF MIAMI _BEACH, TO BE LOCATED ON THE OPEN
SPACE IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE CURRENT
LIBRARY SITE, ABUTTING THE BASS MUSEUM OF ART.
WHEREAS, the City has been involved in discussions with Metropolitan Dade County,
regarding the County's funding of a proposed regional library for the City of Miami Beach, if the
City can provide a site for same; and
WHEREAS, the current City library located on Collins Avenue, between 21st and 22nd
Streets, does not currently meet the needs of the City due to, among other things, changing
demographics in the City over the years, which have included a population of more adults and
children requiring library services, inadequate materials, and the need for other library services and
reference requests that cannot possibly be met by the current library; and
~REAS, in its continued discussions with the County, and in consideration of options
that would meet the best interests of the citizens of Miami Beach, the Mayor and City Commission
would now recommend to the Board of County Commissioners of Metropolitan Dade County that
a proposal by the City offering the land on the north side of the open space of the current library
property, abutting the Bass Museum of Art, be offered to the County as a proposed site and that,
accordingly, the County commence to develop its proposal for funding of the development and
construction of a regional library for the City of Miami Beach.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Commission of the City
of Miami Beach, Florida that the Mayor and City Commission herein urge the Board of County
Commissioners of Metropolitan Dade County to continue discussions and negotiations with the City
toward the funding, development, and construction of a regional library in the City of Miami Beach,
to be located on the open space in the northeast comer of the current library site, abutting the Bass
Museum of Art.
