SUBJECT: Miami Beach Fire Rescue Stands Ready to Provide Mutual Aid
The purpose of this LTC is to advise you of support being provided by the Miami Beach Fire Rescue
Department to areas impacted by Hurricane Ian.
Overview
As part of the Florida Fire Chiefs Association (FFCA) Statewide Emergency Response Plan
(SERP) and FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue program, the Miami Beach Fire Rescue
Department stands ready to assist to jurisdictions affected by Hurricane Ian.
Hurricane Ian has developed into a CAT 4 storm and is expected to intensify before it makes
landfall in the Port Charlotte area. The entire state of Florida will feel impacts from this major
hurricane, but Miami Beach is not expected to feel the worst of it. Chief Virgil Fernandez has
directed staff to provide mutual aid through SERP and FEMA programs.
Resources Deployed and Ready to Deploy
Early Tuesday, two Miami Beach Fire Department firefighters were activated with Florida Task
Force-2, one of two Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams from Miami-Dade County. They
were deployed to Orlando and await orders under FEMA’s search and rescue program.
This morning, MBFD also sent one Rescue and one Engine company to rendezvous with other
units from neighboring Fire Departments to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens to await
deployment to affected areas.
The following compliment of resources remain at the ready for deployment:

The Statewide Emergency Response Plan was developed following response to Hurricane Andrew
in 1992 to establish a mechanism for systematic and rapid mobilization, deployment, organization,
and management of emergency resources throughout Florida. After such incidents as Hurricane
Andrew and the Surfside building collapse, many resources were sent to our area to help. This
time Miami Beach can return the favor.
