Resolution 2022-32371 1 RESOLUTION NO., 2022-32371 ' 1 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO WORK WITH THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND ANY OTHER AGENCIES HAVING JURISDICTION TO EVALUATE PROPOSED SOLUTIONS TO TRAFFIC SAFETY ISSUES AT ALTON ROAD AND 63RD STREET, AND TO TAKE ALL STEPS WHICH MAY BE NECESSARY FOR THE CITY OR OTHER APPROPRIATE AGENCY TO EXPEDITE THE REGULATORY PROCESS, CONDUCT THE REQUIRED STUDIES, AND OBTAIN ANY PERMITS WHICH MAY BE REQUIRED TO ESTABLISH A TRAFFIC LIGHT OR OTHER APPROPRIATE TRAFFIC DEVICE OR SOLUTION AT OR NEAR 63RD STREET AND ALTON ROAD, IN ORDER TO ADDRESS ON-GOING TRAFFIC SAFETY ISSUES AT THIS INTERSECTION. WHEREAS, area residents have repeatedly expressed concerns that the area of 63rd Street and Alton Road (at or near the eastward curve of Alton Road) is unsafe; and WHEREAS, there have been a number of vehicular accidents in the area, with a total of 35 traffic accidents since 2020, with the most recent fatal accident taking place on October 2, 2021, injuring the driver and killing the passenger(See Attached Report); and WHEREAS, although located within the City's territorial jurisdiction, the Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT") owns and controls Alton Road, and is generally responsible for design, permitting, construction and installation of all traffic devices on roads comprising the State Highway System; and WHEREAS, notwithstanding the City's lack of jurisdiction over FDOT and Alton Road, due to the paramount concern for traffic safety at this location, the Mayor and City Commission desire for the City Administration to engage and work with FDOT to evaluate the traffic safety concerns at this intersection, and take all steps necessary to expedite the regulatory process and obtain permits required to establish a traffic light or other appropriate traffic device that activated by the speed of a vehicle, or another traffic solution at or near 63rd Street and Alton Road. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby directing the .City Administration to work with The Florida Department Of Transportation and any other agencies having jurisdiction to evaluate proposed solutions to traffic safety issues at Alton Road and 63rd Street, and to take all steps which may be necessary for the City or other appropriate agency to expedite the regulatory process, conduct the required studies, and obtain any permits which may be required to establish a traffic light or other appropriate traffic device or solution at or near 63rd Street and Alton Road, in order to address on-going traffic safety issues at this intersection. _ PASSED and ADOPTED this 4 day of AA PK" 2022.
