Resolution 2022-32369 RESOLUTION NO. ; 2022-32369 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING CITY EMPLOYEES TO DONATE ANNUAL AND SICK LEAVE, PURSUANT TO SECTION 78-3 OF THE CITY CODE, FOR THE BENEFIT OF FLORIDIANS DISPLACED AND/OR ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY HURRICANE IAN; AND FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO REMIT THE DONATED FUNDS TO THE AMERICAN RED CROSS, FLORIDA DISASTER FUND, AND GLOBAL EMPOWERMENT MISSION IN SUPPORT OF THIS URGENT HUMANITARIAN CRISIS. WHEREAS, on September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall along Florida's gulf coast at Category 4 strength, with sustained winds of 155 mph, and leaving behind devastating loss of life and property; and WHEREAS, official reports are estimating for the death toll to exceed 140, marking Hurricane Ian as the most deadly hurricane to hit the state of Florida since 1935; and WHEREAS, the economic fallout from Hurricane Ian will rival some of the worst hurricane damage in U.S. history with total losses estimated to amount to between $180 billion and $210 billion; and WHEREAS, though the winds have died down and the waters have receded, Floridians impacted by Hurricane Ian have a long road of recovery as they grapple with power outages, lack of shelter and housing, lost jobs, and injuries; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission adopted Ordinance No. 2022-4485, authorizing City employees having at least 260 combined hours of annual and sick leave after any donation, to donate annual and sick leave for humanitarian disaster relief, as authorized via Resolution by the Mayor and City Commission; and WHEREAS, as such, the Mayor and City Commission desire to allow City employees to voluntarily donate annual and sick leave hours (to be converted into currency at the donating employees' respective hourly rates) in order to provide much needed assistance to the people of Florida affected by Hurricane Ian. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED THAT THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA hereby authorize City employees to donate Annual and Sick Leave, pursuant to Section 78-3 of the City Code, for the benefit of Floridians displaced and/or adversely affected by Hurricane Ian; and further directing the City Administration to remit the donated funds to the American Red Cross, Florida Disaster Fund, and Global Empowerment Mission in support of this urgent humanitarian crisis.
