LTC 051-2023 Design Review Board DRB22-0864 2057 71st Street Miami Beach Entrance SignOFFICE OF THE CITY CLERK Honorable Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of the City Commission : Rafael Granado, City Clerk February 6, 2023 Design Review Board: DRB22-0864 2057 71st Street – Miami Beach Entrance Sign On September 6, 2022, the Design Review Board (“DRB”) reviewed an application, on an advisory basis, for the design and construction of a new Miami Beach entrance sign to replace an existing entrance sign in the right-of-way. The Office of Capital Improvements Projects (CIP) submitted the application. The site is located in the irregularly shaped right-of-way at the western entrance of Normandy Isle, where the John F. Kennedy Causeway intersects with Bay Drive and diverges into Normandy Drive and 71st Street. The entrance sign is one of two proposed North Beach entrance markers on City-owned properties, with the second sign to be located at Harding and 87th Street, which was approved by the Historic Preservation Board on September 13, 2022. Both signs were designed by Shulman + Associates, in collaboration with Savino Miller Design Studio. The new sign on 71st Street, which will replace an existing entrance sign, includes large channel letters, 4’-10” in height, that spell out “MIAMI BEACH” at the base of an architectural canopy. The canopy is supported by rectilinear piers painted in a varying Pantone palette of “Neon Pink”, “Disco Ball Metallic” and “Sand”, and features perforations that allow for palm trees to weave through the structure. In addition to the new entrance marker, lighting, landscape, and general restoration of the hardscape is part of the project scope. Attached is a rendering of the proposal. In addition to the above-noted features of the proposal, the DRB also discussed the feasibility of including some form of future pedestrian access to the sign, as well as the possibility of an even larger sign. The design was ultimately very well received by the DRB, which unanimously recommended approval of the proposal with no modifications. RG/RW/TRM/MAB C: Alina T.
