Kasdin and Members of the City Commission FROM: Sergio Rodriguez City Manager SUBJECT: Reed Midem Organisation Events at Miami Beach Convention Center We are pleased to announce that the City of Miami Beach will once again be hosting the MIDEM Latin America & Caribbean music market at the Miami Beach Convention Center in 1998. The show will begin setting up on August 21, with the event opening to the industry on August 25th and running through August 28th. The return of this prestigious event for its second consecutive year will once again showcase Miami Beach as the gateway between North and South America for numerous major record labels and independent record companies in connecting them with top media and artists in the recording industry. While we have not yet secured firm dates for 1999, we are currently working with Reed Midem to insure the show's return again in that year. Due to the success enjoyed by the organizers in the production of MIDEM last year, the Reed Midem Organisation, out of its Paris-based office, has also contracted to launch MIPIM Americas in November 1998 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Scheduled for November 22-24 this year, MIPIM Americas will bring together supply and demand from South, Central, and North America in the real estate property sector. Like MIDEM, we look forward to developing this event into an annual presentation as well. - We are excited to further our relationship with the Reed Midem Organisation, one of the world's premier trade show producers. This organization is responsible for the worldwide production of thirteen trade shows dedicated to the music, television, multimedia, and real estate industries. The World Education Market will be held from the 24th to 27th of May 2000 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Conceived of as a 'one-stop shopping' event, The World Education Market will be the first commercial forum for public and private sector players from all areas of education, serving learners of all ages, regardless of their location or choice of media - from educational institutions to at-home learning, from technical schools to workplace training, from books and television to the Internet. The opportunity to buy and sell their products, expertise and services, to co-finance development and to create partnerships will attract a range of participants which reflects the multi-faceted nature of education itself: schools, colleges and universities, government and development agencies, workplace training, distance learning and adult continuing education, book and multimedia publishing, the telecommunications industry, including television, satellite and cable, as well as computer hardware and software companies. The world trade in education in 1996 was estimated at $28 billion and is projected to increase dramatically. "The education market is truly becoming global," declared Xavier Roy. "Dealing simultaneously with smaller budgets and increased demands for educational opportunities, governments and institutions around the world are turning their attention to the international marketplace to purchase solutions, systems and expertise, to adapt and localize products and resources, to enter into collaborative development and partner with the private sector, and also, to sell their own products and expertise to the rest of the world, " underlined Xavier Roy. a, Reed t_ Exhibition ~ Companies Delivering Business Contacts FRANCE: REED MIDEM ORGANISATION - BI' 572 - II RUE DU COLONEL I'IERRE AVIA - 75726 I'ARIS CEDEX 15 - TEL, 33 (()) 1 4] 904400 - FAX 33 (0) I 41 904409 U,K, REED MIDEM ORGANISATION LTD, 247 TOTTENHAM COURT ROAD LONDON W ]1' OAU TEL: 0171 528 0086 - FAX: 0171 895 0949 USA, , REED MIDEM ORGANISATION - 475 PARK AVENUE SOUTH - 2ND FLOOR - NEW YORK - NY ]00]6 - TEL, (212) 689 4220 - FAX, (212) 689 4348 JAPAN, REED MIDEM ORGANISATION REPRESENTATIVE - IRYO BUILDING 2F - 4-13-18 GINZA CHUO-KU - TOKYO ]04 - TEL 81 (3) 3.142 31]4 - FAX 81 (3) 3542 3115 REED MIDEM ORGANISATION SOCIFTE ANONYME AU CAPITAL DF 2,000,000 FRANCS REGISTRI DU COMMERCE PARIS 1\ 662 003 557 SIRIT 662 003 557 00052 - APE 748 J "Over the last several years, many of our clients from publishing, television and multimedia have brought to our attention the need for a greater focus on the education marketplace," said Xavier Roy. Prior to launching The World Education Market, Reed Midem undertook a major international study that included some 300 interviews with key players from the full range of industries serving education as well as with the direct providers of education to learners. "What emerged was a clear agenda for the new millennium and a need for a marketplace that responded to the expanding needs," declared Xavier Roy. "New approaches to learning, education and skills development, such as the promotion of a lifelong learning culture and the integration of the capacities of new technologies, are needed to meet the challenges of globalization. This means that all players are now more attentive to what is being done around the world and more eager to adapt for their own specific needs the best solutions that have been developed or applied elsewhere. " With this 4-day event, education decision-makers, buyers and suppliers from around the world will have the opportunity to demonstrate and compare products, make informed purchases, gain new experience and knowledge, and forge the collaborations and partnerships that are critical to success at home and on the world stage. In addition, The World Education Market will offer an extensive program of conferences that will focus on doing business in education, with sessions that provide overviews of the needs and opportunities in countries around the world, practical workshops on adapting content to reflect local needs and circumstances, as well as information on how to sell, buy and produce materials in the international marketplace. Vancouver will be the host city for The World Education Market. "We're very gratified with the selection of Vancouver as the site of The World Education Market," said Paul Ramsey, the Minister of Education, Skills and Training for the Province of British Columbia and current Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada. "Canada is recognised internationally for the quality of its educational products and services. We've been active in the international arena for many years and, as a result, we've built the kind of expertise that has allowed us to establish mutually beneficial partnerships in all regions of the world" One of the most multicultural societies in the world, Canada enjoys strong international ties via its membership in such organisations as the Asia Pacific Economic Council, the Commonwealth and the Francophonie. Headquartered in Paris, France, Reed Midem Organisation has been a world leader in the organization of top level international professional events for over thirty years. It operates extensively in the communications industry with trade shows and conferences in television, multimedia publishing and music.
