A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,
FLORIDA, APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING THE
ADMINISTRATION TO IDENTIFY AN APPROPRIATE
STORAGE LOCATION AT A CITY -OWNED OR LEASED
STORAGE FACILITY, FOR THE CITY'S STORAGE OF
THE SEASHELL MENORAH AND DREIDEL ANNUALLY
DISPLAYED ALONG WITH OTHER HOLIDAY -RELATED
DECORATIONS ON LINCOLN ROAD, A CITY -OWNED
RIGHT OF WAY AREA, WITH THE FOREGOING CITY
STORAGE OPPORTUNITY TO ONLY BE MADE
AVAILABLE SO LONG AS THE WORKS ARE
DISPLAYED IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.
WHEREAS, for more than 20 years, Miami Beach artist Roger Abramson's
oversized menorah and the world's largest spinning dreidel, each made out of more
than 25,000 seashells gathered on Miami Beach, have been a staple on Lincoln Road
during Hannukah; and
WHEREAS, the two pieces have been displayed on Lincoln Road in combination
with other holiday decorations in accordance with applicable laws, and became a
popular attraction to locals and visitors alike during the holiday season, with
approximately 2 million people visiting the sculptures in the last two decades; and
WHEREAS, the sturdy sculptures are held together with a combination of
exterior adhesives Mr. Abramson has developed through the years, and every year
before he brings out the sculptures, he has to make repairs with new shells; and
WHEREAS, the menorah and the dreidel are in need of adequate and
appropriate storage during the off-season, in order to preserve the integrity of the
structures and prevent further wear -and -tear; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission desire to authorize the City
Administration to find storage for the seashell menorah and the dreidel displayed along
with other holiday -related decorations on Lincoln Road, a City -owned right of way area,
with the foregoing City storage opportunity to only be made available so long as the
works are displayed in the City of Miami Beach.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission, hereby approve and authorize the Administration to identify an appropriate
storage location at a City -owned or leased storage facility, for the City's storage of the
seashell menorah and dreidel annually displayed along with other holiday -related
decorations on Lincoln Road, a City -owned right of way area, with the foregoing City
storage opportunity to only be made available so long as the works are displayed in the
City of Miami Beach.
