Resolution 2023-32649 RESOLUTION NO. 2023-32649 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA; ACCEPTING THE HISPANIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE'S MOTION, MADE AT ITS MAY 11, 2023 MEETING, AND DIRECT THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO PRODUCE AND RECORD A HISTORICAL ARCHIVE INTERVIEW SEGMENT, TO BE AIRED ON MBTV 77 DURING 2023 HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH,ABOUT ANY OF THE FOLLOWING PERSONS AS THE FOCUS SUBJECTS OF THE INTERVIEW: LUIS FUENTE, CECI VELASCO, OR GLORIA AND EMILIO ESTEFAN. WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month runs each year from September 15 through October 15, and celebrates the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans, who have enriched our culture and society and helped make the United States into the incredible country it is today; and WHEREAS, in 1968, the U.S. Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week, and the observance was subsequently expanded in 1988 to a month-long celebration, September 15 through October 15; and WHEREAS, September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua; and WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month is particularly special to Miami Beach and the Greater Miami area —today, 59% of Greater Miami's population is of Hispanic origin, with numbers of more than one million; and WHEREAS, Latinos in our communities occupy positions of great responsibility in business, labor, government, science and technology, education, religion, the arts and entertainment; and WHEREAS, in recognition of the achievements and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino community, the City of Miami Beach holds events throughout the month promote a celebration of Hispanic culture in our City; and WHEREAS, at its May 31, 2023 meeting, the City's Hispanic Affairs Advisory Committee passed a motion urging the City Commission to direct the City Administration to produce and record a historical archive interview segment to be aired on MBTV 77 during Hispanic Heritage Month; and WHEREAS, the Committee recommended any of the following persons as the focus subjects of the interview: • Luis Fuente— Founder/Owner of Café Avanti • Ceci Velasco • Gloria and Emilio Estefan. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and the City hereby accept the Hispanic Advisory Committee's motion, made at its May 11, 2023 meeting, and direct the City Administration to produce and record a historical archive interview segment, to be aired on MBTV 77 during 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month, about any of the following persons as the focus subjects of the interview: Luis Fuente, Ceci Velasco, or Gloria and Emilio Estefan.
