Hudak, City Manager (] • f1 � f' Uc¼C �..)VVI.AJ'->'\. ---;-o< Date: January 12, 2024 Subject: Miami Beach First Generation College Scholarship Program Update The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to update you on the status of the City's First­Generation Scholarship Program for Miami Beach residents attending Florida International University (FIU). This scholarship program resulted in 57 Miami Beach residents attending FIU in the 2023-2024 school year receiving a need-based scholarship of $1,875. Funding for this program is provided through a partnership between the City of Miami Beach, Miami Beach Police Athletic League, and the Miami Beach Chamber Education Foundation contributing a total of $35,000, as well as 2:1 matching funds from the FIU Foundation partners at $70,000 under the FIU First Generation Scholarship Program. Total funds available in 2023-2024 were $105,000. The scholarship program saw a 22.8% increase in the number of Miami Beach residents receiving this need-based scholarship from the prior year: School Year # of Residents Scholarship Amount 2022-2023 44 $2,387 2023-2024 56 $1,875 Total Impact 101 $210,000 In addition to being a Miami Beach resident and FIU student, recipients of the Miami Beach scholarship must qualify for financial aid through the Federal Pell Grant Program, which provides need-based grants to low income undergraduate and certain post-baccalaureate students.
