On behalf of the South of Fifth Neighborhood Association (SOFNA) Board of Directors, attached please find a resolution relating to the location of Fire Station 1. Clerk's Note: See Items R? F:\CLER\$ALL\L TC FROM ASSOCIATIONS\SOFNA 01302024.docx January 29, 2024 Dear Mayor and Commissioners: At a public meeting of the South of Fifth Neighborhood Association (SOFNA) held on May 15th, 2023, the proposal to consider locating the new Fire Station No.1 at a site other than the one currently occupied by South Shore Community Center (SSCC) was discussed. After input from our residents, the following resolution was passed by the SOFNA board of directors: "The board of the South of Fifth Neighborhood Association (SOFNA) has as its primary concern the safety of our residents. For that reason we urge that Fire Station No. 1 be located where it can provide the fastest response time to a majority of the residents in its district and be built as soon as possible since life safety issues should take priority over all other considerations." As a matter of policy, SOFNA does not take positions on projects or plans outside the borders of our neighborhood, unless they have a direct impact on our residents. In this case, we are not taking a position on the South Shore Community Center (SSCC) as it is not viewed as a neighborhood asset to South of Fifth. If there are reasonable concerns that the SSCC location may not the best choice for a new Fire Station based on life safety, we support a rapid evaluation by independent experts of the alternative sites proposed by Commissioner Rosen-Gonzalez, as time is of the essence. The safety of your residents must take priority in the decision you make on this matter. Respectfully, SOFNA Board of Directors Keith Marks -- President Alyson Herman -- Vlce President Jordan Levy -- Treasurer Ronald Starkman -- Secretary John Caprio -- Director Mark Haskins -- Director David Podein -- Director
