Motion from the Police/Citizens Relations Committee's March 05, 2024 Meeting
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to is to inform the Mayor and the Commission of
an important communication ratified by the Police/Citizens Relations Committee at their March 5,
2024 meeting. The Committee requests that this message be shared in an urgent and expedient
manner.
STATEMENT
The Police/Citizens Relations Committee (PCRC) consists of residents and business leaders of the
City of Miami Beach. The Committee deeply cares about the city and is committed to the safety and
well-being of its residents, employees, visitors, and guests.
Whereas the PCRC has been focusing on Spring Break concerns for many years, it has been
cognizant of the City trying many different tactics with their approach to Miami Beach in March. The
PCRC is encouraged by the fact that there finally is a comprehensive plan in place, one that illustrates
the competency of all those that have diligently focused on getting it right.
On the evening of Saturday March 2, 2024, the PCRC had the privilege of touring the Art Deco
Cultural District with the Miami Beach Police Department (MBPD). The committee was able to visit
the Real-Time Intelligence Center, the Mobile Command vehicle, Goodwill operations being
headquartered in the Art Deco Center, and other facets of the district.
Following the tour, it is very clear the thought, care, and commitment everyone has made. The PCRC
feels that the MBPD with all the support of the departments, ambassadors and other agencies
supplementing their efforts has them in a substantially fortified position. While there may very well be
issues brought to the Art Deco Cultural District in the weeks to come, the committee strongly believes
that the City is indeed set up for success.
The City Administration at large appears confident with their ability to carry this plan out. All indicators
are that Miami Beach is poised to have a successful Spring Break 2024. That said, there will also be
an opportunity to garner any lessons learned from this plan and tweak it accordingly for the future
once through the month of March.
The PCRC further believes that the MBPD and City Administration at large have demonstrated their
professionalism and competency with their planning. Now is the time for them to confidently execute
this plan without constraint, as they have been training to do over the course of the last year. We
believe they are prepared and are in the strongest position possible to actually protect the City.
The PCRC would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mayor Meiner and the Miami Beach City
Commission for being committed to making a difference for the City of Miami Beach during the Spring
Break period. The PCRC appreciates all that the City is doing and reiterates its commitment to
supporting the City Administration and staff at addressing the concerns collectively shared this time
of the year. This clearly is making a difference.
Finally, the PCRC would like to take this opportunity to extend a sincere THANK YOU to the MBPD,
all City employees, and collaborating agency personnel who will be the boots on the ground in the
Art Deco Cultural District in the coming weeks. While there will be long days and significant time
officers and employees will be away from their family and loved ones, it is unlikely that all the sacrifices
and things they do that protect and make Miami Beach the amazing city that it is will actually be
known. On behalf of all of those you serve, the Police/Citizens Relations Committee wishes you a
successful month, while at the same time looking forward to a time when March will return to business
as usual as the rest of the year.
THANK YOU for being there for the City, and to your families for being so generous in giving you the
freedom to perform the great jobs that you do for the City of Miami Beach.
