SUBJECT: Art in Public Places Committee Motions - March 19, 2024 The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to provide an update regarding motions made during the March 19, 2024 Art in Public Places (AiPP) Committee meeting. At the request of Commissioner Alex Fernandez, a discussion item was referred to the Art in Public Places Committee at the February 21, 2024 City Commission meeting to discuss Sophie Ringel's proposed art project "Hurricane of Trash" (HOT) and its permanent installation inside the Miami Beach Convention Center. HOT is a large-scale installation designed by California-based artist Joanna Wang created from 400 pounds of plastic that was collected by Clean Miami Beach, an organization led by Sophie Ringel and dedicated to keeping our community and natural habitats free of garbage and harmful pollutants such as single-use plastics. Motion: Before further consideration of the acquisition of the Hurricane of Trash art installation, the Art in Public Places Committee makes a motion for City staff to explore other potential locations in the City of Miami Beach beyond the Miami Beach Convention Center where the artwork can be housed on City property. The above motion was made by Steve Berke, seconded by Gabriel Paez and approved unanimously. Members in attendance: Ann-Kathrin Seif, Steve Berke, Sara de las Reyes, Gabriel Paez. Guest in attendance: Sophie Ringel. Motion: Responding to an inquiry from the Miami Beach Botanical Garden for consideration of public artwork to be situated on their property, the Art in Public Places Committee makes a motion to create a call to artists for a site-specific public art installation in the Miami Beach Botanical Garden.
