Retention of Deputy City Attorney Nick Kallergis
The purpose of this L TC is to update the Commission on the status of a key member of the City
Attorney's Office (CAO). At the April 3, 2024 City Commission meeting, it was announced that
Deputy City Attorney Nicholas (Nick) Kallergis would be departing the CAO to pursue another
opportunity. However, I am pleased to now share that, after much reflection, Nick has chosen to
stay with the CAO in a new role as a Chief Deputy.
Nick joined the CAO in 2013 after graduating cum /aude from the University of Miami School of
Law. His areas of legal practice include land use and zoning, legislation, ethics and conflicts of
interest, special assessment districts, and elections. Nick represents the City's Planning
Department and four land development boards (Planning Board, Historic Preservation Board,
Design Review Board, and Board of Adjustment). He also advises the Land Use and Sustainability
Committee, as well as the City's Environment & Sustainability Department.
Nick's contributions to the CAO over his more-than-ten-year tenure cannot be overstated. He has
been an essential-and often, a very first-point of contact for many City Commission members,
key members of the Administration, and our land use boards. Nick has played a critical role in
helping to draft and amend our land development regulations and other legislation, including our
new Resiliency Code. Nick has also been the liaison from the CAO to the Ad Hoc Charter Review
and Revision Board. Additionally, Nick has drafted more than 50 ballot questions and more than
50 alcohol-hours ordinances, one of the most high-profile and challenging policy issues that the
City Commission has dealt with over recent years. Nick was also crucial in stewarding the City
through the COVID-19 pandemic, working on daily emergency orders to mitigate the public health
and safety crisis.
Nick will serve as Chief Deputy City Attorney overseeing land use, legislation, transactions, and
procurement. Chief Deputy City Attorney Robert F. Rosenwald, Jr., another key member of the
CAO team, will continue in his role overseeing litigation matters.
Please join me in congratulating Nick Kallergis and thanking him for his continued service to the
City of Miami Beach.
