99-23134 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 99-23134 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THAT MIAMI-DADE COUNTY MAINTAIN THE TOLLS ON THE VENETIAN ISLAND CAUSEWAY. WHEREAS, a new toll booth facility was planned and designed for the Venetian Causeway to coincide with the construction of the new west bridge, at great expense to the public; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County proposed to replace the existing toll plaza facility prior to the newly adopted County policy which does not allow toll increases; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County has contended the new County policy prohibiting toll increases creates an annual operating cost deficit for the toll facility of half a million dollars; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is now considering demolishing the existing toll facility and not rebuilding it on the contention that there is an annual operating cost deficit; and WHEREAS, removal of the toll facility, a historic element of the Venetian Isles, would significantly adversely impact the number of vehicles traveling on the residential Venetian Causeway to and from Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, the Venetian Causeway and Islands were designed as and have developed as a residential neighborhood composed primarily of single family residences; and WHEREAS, the residents of the Venetian Islands support the continuation of use of the existing toll booth facility; and WHEREAS, the master plan for future development of the Venetian Islands and Causeway contemplates a continuation of the toll facility; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach supports continuation of a toll on the Venetian Causeway for all of the aforegoing reasons. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby request and urge that the Miami-Dade County maintain the tolls on the Venetian Island Causeway and be it further resolved that the City, its Administration and City Attorney shall take such action as is necessary to prevent the removal ofthe toll booth facilities, including seeking court intervention, without further resolution or action by the City Commission. Our residents on the Venetian have voiced their objections to these plans throughout the project. It is my opinion that the removal of this tollbooth will have detrimental effects on the Venetian Islands neighborhood, both on the Miami and Miami Beach sides. Please place an item on the April 14 agenda for the City Commission to consider passing a resolution urging the County to find some way to keep the tollbooth intact. 475 Agenda Item ~ Date~
