A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION DEFER THE BIDDING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ITS
PLANNED RECONSTRUCTION OF INDIAN CREEK DRIVE, BETWEEN 26TH
AND 37TH STREETS, UNTIL SUCH TIME AS CONCEPT PLANS FOR THE CITY'S
INDIAN CREEK GREENWAY CAN BE ACCOMMODATED INTO THE PROJECT.
WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has developed plans for the
restoration ofIndian Creek Drive, between 26th and 37th Streefs (the Project); and
WHEREAS, the Project was designed to address the undermining of the roadway that has occurred
as a result of the erosion ofthe shoreline along that section of the Indian Creek Waterway; and
WHEREAS, the plans are complete and the Project is scheduled to be advertised for bids in late
August 1999; and
WHEREAS, as an outgrowth of the City's development of the Indian Creek Greenway Project, a
number of potential conflicts were identified in the FDOT's plans for Indian Creek Drive, including the
proposed steel guardrail from 26th to 34th Street and a thirty two (32) inch solid concrete barrier from 34th
to 37th Street, along the west side ofIndian Creek Drive; and
WHEREAS, concerns have been raised that the proposed solid barrier wall and guardrail may obstruct
pedestrian access, limit available space for construction of the greenway, and not represent the preferred
treatment of the waterway shoreline; and
WHEREAS, the City's Planning and Public Works Departments are scheduling a meeting with the
FDOT representatives to identify and consider alternative approaches to the Project that would enable the
primary restoration work to proceed while allowing for the aboveground solution to accommodate the City's
Greenway Project.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DUL Y RESOL VED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that Florida Department of
Transportation is hereby requested to defer the bidding and implementation of its planned reconstruction of
Indian Creek Drive, between 26th and 37th Streets, until such time as concept plans for the City's Indian
Creek Greenway can be accommodated into the Project.
