Gonzalez ~.... i¡rJ'- ~ City Manager i , () JUNIOR POLICE A~DEMY GRADUATION Date: July 21, 2004 To: Subject: This Letter to the City Commission is to invite the Mayor and Commissioners to attend the graduation of the second Junior Police Academy class on July 30th at 1 :00 p.m. in the Community Room at the Police Station. The Junior Police Academy is a three week program consisting of morning classes, physical activities and "hands on" scenarios in the afternoon. The curriculum and activities are chosen to highlight lessons in team building, ethics, leadership and critical thinking. The ultimate goal was to balance an emphasis on learning and discipline, with lots of fun and excitement. Classroom lesson plans were comprised of subject material including law, patrol procedures, police department organization, crime scene investigation, and basic report writing. Presentations were also given by the FBI, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, the State Attorney's Office and the Fire Department. Positive benefits of this program include enhanced crime prevention due to the strong bonds formed between juveniles and the police. As well as the potential of come of the cadets choosing to pursue a career in law enforcement in the community in which they grew up.
