The Collins Park Cultural Center Oversight Committee has submitted a recommendation in regards
to the request to be heard on the July 28, 2004, Commission Meeting requesting to grant a
Certificate of Appropriateness for the demolition of the existing Library at 21 00 Collins Avenue and
the restoration of the Rotunda.
The Committee has recommended that the Commission appropriate funds for the demolition, that
the demolition not take place until January 16, 2005 , that the site remains in a stable condition for
the sake of the emerging neighborhood, and until after the third annual Miami Beach Art Basel event
and the National Foundation of the Arts tribute to Mikhail Baryshnikov on January 15, 2005.
In addition, the Committee also requested that in the event that the old library is vacated by October
2004, that the necessary resources be appropriated to protect and secure the vacated library
building until January 2005.

SUBJECT: DEMOLITION OF THE 21 ST STREET LIBRARY
Dear Mayor and Commissioners,
The Collins Park Cultural Center Oversight Committee urges you to approve the
demolition of the 21 st Street library and the preservation of the Rotunda structure
as recommended by the Historic Preservation Board on May 11, 2004.
In addition, we request the following:
1. That the Commission appropriate funds for the demolition, but that the
demolition not take place until January 16,2005 in order to insure that the site
remains in stable condition for the sake of the emerging neighborhood, and
until after the Third Annual Miami Beach Art Basel and the National
Foundation of the Arts tribute to Mikhael Baryshnikov on January 15th.
2. That the Commission, in anticipation that the old library will be vacated by
October, appropriate the necessary resources to protect and secure the vacated
library building until the January demolition and accommodates the use of the
building by Art Basel in December.
The Collins Park Cultural Center Oversight Committee appreciates your approval
of these measures and looks forward to celebrating the vibrant new Cultural
Center and restored historic Collins Park.
