Kasdin and Members of the City Commission FROM: Sergio Rodriguez City Manager SUBJECT: GREATER MIAMI CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU ENDORSES THE EFFORT TO LOCATE A NEW BASEBALL STADIUM IN MIAMI BUT OPPOSES ANY INITIATIVE THAT 'WOULD LEVY ANY ADDITIONAL BED OR FOOD AND BEVERAGE TAX OR EXPAND THE USE OF THE EXISTING BED OR FOOD AND BEVERAGE TAX FOR THE PURPOSE OF BUILDING OR OPERATING A NEW BASEBALL STADIUM IN MIAMI- DADE COUNTY For your information, attached is a Resolution from the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau regarding the above-captioned subject matter, passed and adopted September 28,1999. SR:.cd Attachrrlent c: Mayra Diaz Buttacavoli Robert Parcher F:\CMGR\$ALL\L TC.99\BUREAU.RES G R E M A T E R I@ CONVENTION & VISITORS ~y~~~:: I \I E [) 99 OCT 28 PM 12: 15 L. ; '( >L~hML::.r, .J OFFICE RESOLUTION WHEREAS, new Florida Marlins owner, Mr. John Henry, has expressed the need for a new baseball stadium; and WHEREAS, current discussions are ongoing regarding the location of a new baseball stadium and methods of financing; and WHEREAS, Miami provides several ideal sites for a new baseball stadium; and WHEREAS, any attempt to burden our visitors with another tax would put our hotels and community at a competitive disadvantage in attracting future convention and leisure visitors; and WHEREAS, 39% of the resort tax currently collected by Miami-Dade County suppo~spo~;and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County, according to a 1996 County supported study, ranked 4th in the nation in the use of resort tax dollars for sports. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau endorses the effort to locate a new baseball stadium in Miami but opposes any initiative that would levy any additional bed or food and beverage tax or expand the use of the existing bed or food and beverage tax for the purpose of building or operating a new baseball stadium in Miami-Dade County.
