At the September 22, 1999 City Commission meeting, the Mayor and City Commission approved a
motion directing the Administration to work with the Historic Preservation staff and City Boards to
develop a list of additional candidates for the Great Floridians 2000 Program.
The Great Floridian Program was established by the Florida Legislature in 1997 as part of the Florida
Department of State's Historical Marker Program. The Program seeks to recognize individuals who
have made important contributions to Florida's history and culture.
The State is now accepting nominations for the fourth round of this program, which ends on
December 31, 1999. Nominations can only be submitted by municipal governments, The City of
Miami Beach is therefore responsible for seeking out interested organizations or individuals for
assistance in selecting eligible nominees who were important to the history of Miami Beach,
The cost of the plaque is $175. If the nomination is selected by the State, either the owner of the
designated property where the plaque will be located, or the person sponsoring the nomination will
be responsible for the cost.
Attached is a master list suggested for Great Floridians nominations, I have also included a copy of
the Nomination Form and the Program Guidelines for your review. Nominations should be
forwarded to me in the form of a City Commission referral to the Community Affairs Committee,
