STATUS OF NEWLY HIRED POLICE OFFICER TRAINEES
This Letter to the Commission is to advise the City Commission on the status of the 17 newly hired
police officer trainees.
On Monday, October 4, 1999, the Police Department hired 17 new police officer trainees. The new
police officer trainees will attend a two-week orientation to be conducted by the Police Department.
At the conclusion of this Department orientation, the police trainees will enter the Academy on
Monday, October 18, 1999, at the Southeast Florida Institute of Criminal Justice. The Police
Academy takes 5 '/2 months. After successful completion of the Police Academy, the police officer
trainees will enter the Field Training Officer (FTO) program for the next 3 ½ months. It is
anticipated that these police officer trainees will be fully trained and ready to assume duties on the
street by themselves at the end of June 2000. This new class of police officer trainees is composed
of seven Hispanic Americans (six males and one female), five African Americans (three males and
one female), four Caucasians (three males and one female) and one Asian American female. In all,
76% of this new class is composed of minorities.
On September 30, 1999, the Police Department completed the final testing phase for the hiring of
Florida certified police officers. The Police Department anticipates filling all of the vacancies, 18-20,
by mid December 1999. Upon hiring, the newly hired police officers will enter the Field Training
Program for 3 ½ months and will be ready to assume duties on the street by themselves in mid March
2000.
We will keep the Mayor and Commissioners advised as the hiring program continues.
