The City will once again participate in this family oriented fund raising event which celebrates survivors and honors those no longer with us. Raising money should not be difficult since regrettably, we have all been made acutely aware of cancer's grip as we ourselves, our co-workers, our families and friends are stricken and battle this disease. Over the past two years combined, the City has raised over $60,000. As a result, Miami Beach was recognized statewide in 2003 with the "Rookie of the Year Award". To ensure Relay's continued success, involvement at every level of the community is essential. The City's campaign this year will be a little different than in the prior two years. This year, we are encouraging employees and members of the community to come to the Relay event on May 14 and have that be the kick-off event for our fund raising efforts that will last from May 14 - July 31, 2005. As was the case with the past two years, it is my sincere hope that Miami Beach's "Relay for Life" event will have the full support of all City Departments, Divisions, as well as that of all our elected officials. I am hopeful that this City will enter a significant number of teams for the Relay on May 14 that will get creative, have fun and at the same time raise money and awareness for this event. I invite each of you to become actively involved as well. With current statistics revealing that 1 in 3 people will have some form of cancer in their lifetime, the time to find a cure is now, and that takes funding.
