This Letter to the Commission is to advise the Mayor and City Commission of the wonderful efforts
of our City Employees in this year's United Way Campaign.
I appointed Police Chief Richard Barreto as this year's Chairman of the United Way Campaign.
ChiefBarreto appointed the following persons as members of the Steering Committee to assist him.
These persons were: Co-Chairman Don De Lucca, Christina Cuervo, Steven Robbins, Michael Aller,
Jacqueline Gonzalez, Richard McKinnon, Jack Richardson, Bernie Ruder, and Jerry Williams.
This year's campaign began with a pep rally and kick-off on September 16 in the First Floor
Community Room at City Hall with the Mayor as the keynote speaker. During the pep rally, United
Way packages were distributed to Ambassadors representing every department within the City.
Our United Way Campaign this year began on September 23 and concluded on October 7. This
year's campaign theme was "100% Participation." Jacqueline Gonzalez was the Chairwoman of the
Leadership Circle and the leadership initiative alone increased from two participants in 1998 to 22
participants in 1999. Leadership donors give at a level of $1,000 or more.
In 1998, the City of Miami Beach raised $31,000. This year's efforts raised in excess of $57,000!
This year's campaign reflected an 83% increase in employee per capita giving and a 39% increase
~ employee participation. As a result of our successful campaign, the City of Miami Beach has been
nominated for the United Way Pacesetter Award by our United Way coordinator, Kathy Litwack.
The City of Miami Beach should be extremely proud, not only of the generosity, but the spirit,
fellowship, and community service demonstrated by our employees as reflected by the substantial
increase in our United Way contributions. We can all be extremely proud that by and through our
donations, we have touched the lives of many in our community who are less fortunate than
ourselves.
