#717 Herald art icle re: life and death of Chuck Hall Aug 1974 Miami in the name of Christopher Columbus. Once, when his expensive new houseboat sank at a Miami Beach dock and workmen had pumped it b'ack to the surface, a news- paper photographer arrived, late and disappointed. Hall obligingly ordered the boat sunk again, for pictures. For all his popularity, there were those who re- garded the former Metro mayor, one-tim'e unsuccess- ful candidate for governor and ultimately mayor of Miami Beach, as a political enigma. HE WAS ACCUSED of being absent when crucial votes were cast and loathe to face, head-on,. momen- tous issue. "Our vacillating mayor," a longtime a~soci- ate on the Metro Commis- sion once said, groaning. "He is a ping-pong ball in a high wind." . But Hall felt that his major role was to be ac- cessible 'to' the public, to help cut red tape and listen to probl~ms. ','Before I got into ,politics I thought I was a pretty sharp character," he .would say. "I had money, a couple of degrees and saw myself as a. big liberal. It wasn't \ until I got this job that I re- alized what a poor man I really was. "This has enriched me so much. Until you share the burdens of people; you ChllCli' Hall Takes Call During Campaign for Governor in don't know how good. life can be." Personal tragedies deep- ened him. His stepdaughter, Kathy Barns, plunged to her death from the Brickell Town House building, an apparent suicide. His !Tioth- er, Mrs. Alice Hall, died after a five-year illness. "I have a greater compas- sion," he said in the wake of these calamities, 'for the suffering of people." HALL ALSO ABSORBED a' crushing,' political defeat when he ran for the nomi- nation for governor in the 1970 Democratic primary and finished last in a four- man field. At 1 :30 in the morning after his defeat, he strippedl the "Chuck Hall for Governor" posters from his white Rolls Royce. . "There's no. point," he mused, "in littering the neighbo:hood." Thus, ehuck Hall emerged in pub- lic as . a loner, with few' close 'personal friends. It struck, he felt, a perfect balance. . I , "Jackie is a good politi- cian's wife. Her great quali- ty is that she is real, Qne of the few real people in a world fuIl of phonies. A lot' of times I've gotten off the ground and bumped my head on the ceiling. You begin to think you're the greatest thing in the world. She d~flates me in a hurry." He spoke of his' wife as a constant source of strength. "Hers is a world that does not change. She knows why I am in public life, that ou,t- side of it and away from p e 0 pie I would be a wretched man - and that would not 'give her happi- ness." , In public, Hall had a nee- dle-sharp wit. He could use , it with devastating effect to disarm a critic. Once,. a nattily dressed public offi- cial appeared before the Metro Commission in a tu-, multuous debate. The man grew redfaced with anger. When it had ended, Hall cleared his throat and said ' calmly, HSir, there is one more question I'd like to ask?"
