LTC 316-2005 Water Theme Dominates December Events (9 MIAMIBEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC # 316-2005 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: FROM: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez 2 December 28, 2005 ~ Water Theme Dominates December ents DATE: SUBJECT: Parks & Recreation kids were all about water this December. They celebrated it in a Miami parade as "Creatures of the Deep." They rolled and threw it in the form of snow. And, they canoed on it and camped by it. Fourth and sixth graders from the North Shore Park and Scott Rakow Youth Centers put their newly learned stilt walking skills to work in the "Cars & Fish" parade at Miami's Bayfront Park Friday, December 2, 2005. Costumed as "Creatures of the Deep," the kids lumbered along Biscayne Boulevard as part of the event sponsored by the Miami Performing Arts Center (MPAC). The youngsters learned the ancient art of stilt walking during a 2005 summer camp program in partnership with MPAC. Ten tons of snow formed the centerpiece for the Winter Wonderland Event at North Shore Park Friday, December 9,2005. Members of the Teen Club helped run the program that included food, rides, games, holiday caroling, music and visits from Mr. & Mrs. Claus. Water in the form of rain forced an early close to the evening, but not before 1,500 parents and kids had a lot of fun. Members of the North Shore Park Teen Club developed an appreciation for the great outdoors during the Center's first ever camping trip to the Peace River over the weekend of December 16-18, 2005. Following weeks of practicing for the outing, the teens canoed 16- miles to successfully locate their campsite. They pitched their own tents, built fires, cooked their dinners and slept out under the stars.
