SUBJECT: Teen Club Coast Guard Adventure
Members of the North Shore Teen Club got a first hand look at America's Homeland
Security preparedness January 14, 2006, with a visit to the United States Coast Guard
Station, Miami Beach. The daylong adventure for the 23-teens and their coaches included a
tour of the Control Center with its camera surveillance system of the Port of Miami and local
waterways aimed at preventing drug smuggling and illegal immigration, and protecting cruise
and commercial shipping into and out of the area.
Attached photos show the teens patrolling the harbor aboard a Coast Guard cutter, where
they were thrilled to take turns at the helm under the supervision of their seafaring hosts.
The teens and their coaches enjoyed a brown bag lunch with Captain James Maes, Miami
Sector Commander, who shared his personal experiences in the security and life-saving
service, and described Coast Guard career opportunities the boys and girls might consider.
