SUBJECT: Monument Island and Maurice Gibb Park Baynanza Event
The purpose of this LTC is to inform you that the City of Miami Beach, Neighborhood
Services Department, in conjunction with Miami-Dade County, Department of Environmental
Resources (DERM) and Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach (ECOMB) is organizing an
environmental event for Monument Island and Maurice Gibb Park. This event is scheduled
for Saturday, April 22, 2006, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Baynanza is an annual County-wide effort with events scheduled simultaneously throughout
Miami-Dade County for April 22, 2006. These events promote environmental awareness and
the importance of protecting our most treasured natural resources, water and land. This is
part of the City's commitment to preserve and maintain our parks and open spaces and
provide volunteer opportunities for the community.
Volunteers will meet in Maurice Gibb Park at 9:00 am, and be assigned to clean the park or
island. ECOMB is coordinating the volunteer transportation to Monument Island with Marine
Patrol, Coast Guard and volunteer boat owners. The volunteers will focus primarily on the
removal and proper disposal of litter. It is anticipated that over 100 volunteers from Miami-
Dade County will participate in this event. Neighborhood Services Department is
coordinating with the Parks and Recreation, Police and Public Works Departments to
provide the necessary materials and services for this project. Volunteers may register for
this event at the City's website, www.miamibeachfl.aov.
