SUBJECT: Summer Splash Bus - Transportation to Flamingo Park Pool Status Update
As the summer season approached, the City Commission sought to ensure that the children
of our community were afforded the opportunity to enjoy the pool amenities throughout the
City. Due to the delays in completing the Normandy Pool, the City Commission directed the
Administration to find a way to assist North Beach residents in using other pool facilities.
At the request of the City Commission, the Parks and Recreation Department implemented a
"Summer Splash Bus" for transportation of North End residents to Flamingo Park Pool. The
service commenced daily operations on May 30, 2006. Pick ups sites included North Shore
Park and Normandy Isle Park.
As stated in an LTC dated May 24, 2006, we proposed to promote and operate this service
on a trial basis for the month of June and if it proved successful continue the operation
through August 11th, which is the entire period that the public school system is in recess.
The following is a summary of the program activity and action steps taken as of June 21,
2006.
. Per the attached spreadsheet the Summer Splash Bus has operated a total of 22
days offering 2 round trips per day (1 day was cancelled due to continuous rain). In
this period a total of 18 passengers have taken advantage of the service with the
heaviest rider ship being 3 persons on a single day.
. The Parks & Recreation Department promoted the Summer Splash Bus program by:
o Placing ads in the Miami Herald Neighbors on 5/25, 6/4 & 6/11/06. Attached
is a copy of the ad.
o Printing and distributing 1,000 double sided flyers (English/Spanish) to park
patrons, residents and local businesses around Normandy Isle and North
Shore Parks. Attached is a copy of the flyer., <:::;

Based on the current rider numbers and the expenditures made to date (see attached
spreadsheet) the Administration has advised the bus contractor that the service will
terminate on June 30, 2006. Although the concept of facilitating transportation for our
children to use City park amenities was a warranted experiment, the practical application of
this program in this instance has proven to be impractical and an ineffective use of City
funds.
