SUBJECT: National Community Development Week
The celebration of National Community Development Week will take place this year from April 24, 2000 to
April 30, 2000. Special events have been planned during the week. Of special interest is the first annual
Community Heroes Awards. This new program is intended to recognize the outstanding work of individuals,
nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, and business partners, for the benefit of the residents of the
City of Miami Beach. Please refer to the attached Exhibit A, "Nomination Information and Nomination
Form", for more information regarding the program. Deadline for nominations will be April 19,2000. The
Community Relations Board will be tasked with selecting the award winners, All nominations will be
acknowledged, We encourage you to use the attached form to nominate deserving individuals/organizations
for these awards.
The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens,
2000 Convention Center Drive and will be the signature celebration of national Community Development
Week in Miami Beach. It has been scheduled to coincide with the unveiling of Hands Trees, at the Miami
Beach Botanical Gardens. These trees have been designed and handcrafted by children, adults, elderly
individuals, and persons with special needs, who receive services through the CDBG-funded programs.
You are cordially invited to attend all of the events, in particular, the Awards Ceremony. Information on all
CDBG funded projects currently underway, as well as a selection of past achievements, will be provided in
a fun and festive atmosphere. Please see the attached tentative schedule (Exhibit B) for additional information
on Community Development Week activities. Please call Mercy Rovirosa in the Community/Economic
Development Department by Wednesday, April 19,2000 at extension 6170 to confirm your attendance.

NOMINATION INFORMATION
CRITERIA
Any individual, public or private nonprofit
organization, governmental agency, voluntary
organization, or for-profit organization who has
made significant contributions to the Miami
Beach community may be nominated.
Criteria for selection of award recipients
include: Outstanding volunteer work, serve as
community leaders or role models, demonstrate
acts of generosity or kindness and/or perform
extraordinary accomplishments.
CATEGORIES
Award recipients will be chosen in the
following categories:
* Individual
* Organization
* Government Agency
* Business Partner
PROCEDURE
Any resident of the City of Miami Beach may
submit a nomination. Any company or
voluntary/non-profit or governmental
organization or agency, operating in the City of
Miami Beach may submit a nomination.
The nomination deadline is April 19,2000.
SELECTION PROCESS
All nominations will be reviewed by a
nomination review panel, comprised of
representatives from the City of Miami Beach
Community Relations Board, The nominator
may be contacted to verify the information
provided.
The nomination review panel will then forward
the recommendations to the Community/
Economic Development Department.
NOTIFICATION
Award recipients will be notified by mail and
invited to attend an award presentation in April,
to coincide with the celebration of National
Community Development Week 2000 in the
City of Miami Beach.
Each nominee will be acknowledged.
