SUBJECT: 2006 Election Information
On July 7, 2006, Commissioner Luis R. Garcia, Jr., Commissioner Group V, submitted his
resignation to run for State Representative District 107. The effective date of the resignation
is November 7, 2006.
It was the sentiment at the June 7,2006 Commission Meeting, that the Commission was in
favor of a November 2006 election should there be a vacancy in Commissioner Garcia's
seat.
On the July 12, 2006 Commission Agenda, Agenda item R7F, there is a resolution calling
for a Special Election to be held on November 7, 2006 for the purpose of electing one City
Commissioner in Group V.
Pursuant to City Charter Section 6.03, candidates can qualify via petition in lieu of the
qualifying fee. "A petition approving his candidacy signed by sufficient qualified and
registered voters to constitute not less than two percent (2%) of this number of such voters
as the same shall be on the date sixty (60) days prior to the first day of qualifying." The date
sixty (60) days prior to the first day of qualifying is July 7, 2006.
The City Clerk's office requested and has received the certification from the Miami-Dade
County Elections Department, see Attachment I.
Miami-Dade County Elections has certified that as of July 7, 2006 there were 41,530
registered voters in the City of Miami Beach. In order to qualify via petition a candidate will
need at least 831 valid City of Miami Beach voters to sign their petition.
In previous City elections the number of certified registered voters in Miami Beach was:
1999 - 35,122
2001 - 36,583
2003 - 34,829
2005 - 42,454
