Autumn Fun Fair- The First Annual Autumn Fun Fair, presented by the P~s ~
Recreation Department, was a great success as over 1,245 people gathered at North Shore
Park Youth Center on Thursday, November 9,2006 to celebrate the autumn season. Over
$1,058 was raised in food, rides, and arts & crafts sales throughout the course of the event.
Families enjoyed a beautiful autumn evening as they strolled around "Old McDonald's Farm"
listening to country music and savoring the taste of western cuisine which included
barbecued ribs, chicken, baked beans, mashed potatoes, and corn bread. Event goers also
shopped at the "Western Out Post" which showcased art work done by the children. The pie
eating contest was a favorite as event goers cheered on the contestants who gobbled their
way to victory for a chance to win a Target gift card, yet stood quietly listening for their raffle
ticket number for their chance to win one of two Thanksgiving turkeys.
Senior Scene - The Miami-Dade Senior Olympic Games was held at Tropical Park on
Saturday, November 11, 2006. Although members from North Shore Park and Youth
Center's Seniors program did not participate in the athletic portion of the event, they were
extended a special invitation to perform a Tai Chi demonstration for Mayor Carlos Alvarez
and City of Miami Commissioners. The demonstration illustrated meditative forms of
exercise used to help improve balance, flexibility, muscle strength and overall health. A
Miami-Dade Senior Games GOLD medal was awarded to the North Shore Park Seniors
Program as well as each individual member for the work well done. The North Shore Park
and Youth Center Teen Club also participated in the event with twenty-two members
volunteering throughout the day.
Around the World- On November 17, 2006, The children from the after school program at
the Scott Rakow Youth Center took part in an interactive learning experience that began
when the children walked through a metal detector and were given their very own passport.
They continued on their journey by visiting each exhibit, which was uniquely designed to
portray the appearance and atmosphere of Australia, China, Brazil, France, Republic of
Congo, Antarctica, and Hawaii. Speakers at each stop presented children with interesting
facts and information, while stamping passports, and giving out souvenirs. All the children
had a wonderful time and went home with more worldly knowledge than what they started
the day with.
Winter Wonderland-. On Friday, December 8,2006, the North Shore Parks Teen Club will
present its 2nd Annual Winter Wonderland at North Shore Park from 6 - 9 PM. Miami
Beach residents and guests are invited to join the fun as the lawn will be transformed into
the biggest "Snow Village" Miami Beach has ever seen, with rides, food, games, face
painting, movies and 50 TONS OF SNOW scattered throughout! Mr. & Mrs. Claus will make
a special visit as they travel from the North Pole to take pictures with everyone. Children
from the City of Miami Beach's after school programs will dazzle the audience with holiday
performances and caroling through out the event. You won't want to miss the "coolest" event
in town.
