LTC # 285-2006 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission t~~ FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: November 29, 2006 SUBJECT: Special Session on Property and Casualty Insurance Reform The purpose of this LTC is to inform the Mayor and City Commission that a special session of the Florida Legislature has been scheduled in order to begin an effort to restructure Florida's property insurance market. The special session will begin on January 16, 2007, and was announced by Governor-elect Charlie Crist, Senate President Ken Pruitt, and House Speaker Marco Rubio. According to the press release, the Senate, House, and Governor-elect will work with Governor Bush and Chief Financial Officer-elect Alex Sink to develop a comprehensive reform plan with the goal of increasing competition, lowering rates, providing incentives for preparedness, and creating greater transparency for consumers. The Property and Casualty Insurance Reform Committee appointed by Governor Bush has released its report of recommendations, which may be accessed at www.mvfloridainsurancereform.com. The Administration is reviewing the report, and anticipates a discussion of the recommendations by the Neighborhoods Committee in December, for the purpose of establishing the City's insurance-related legislative priorities for both the Special Session and the 2007 regular session of the Florida Legislature.
