LTC # 072-2007 RECEIVED 2001 MAR 29 PM~: 30 CITY CLERK'S OFF ICE OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER LETTER TO COMMISSION DATE: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager ~ - ~ March 29, 2007 U Q Monument Island and Maurice Gibb Park Baynanza Event TO: FROM: SUBJECT: The purpose of this LTC is to inform you that the City of Miami Beach, Neighborhood Services Department, in conjunction with Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources (DERM) and the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach (ECOMB), is organizing an environmental clean-up event for Monument Island and Maurice Gibb Park. This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., as part of Baynanza. As you may know, Baynanza is an annual, county-wide program with events scheduled simultaneously throughout Miami-Dade County on April 14, 2007. These events promote environmental awareness and the importance of protecting our most treasured natural resources, water and land. Our participation is tied to the Key Intended Outcome of "Improve Cleanliness of Miami Beach Waterways" and "Improve Cleanliness of Miami Beach Rights-of-Ways especially in Business Areas", and demonstrates the City's commitment to preserving and maintaining our parks and open spaces, and providing volunteer opportunities for the community. One of the highlights of this event is the adoption of Monument Island by ECOMB, where several of their volunteer projects will occur over the course of the year. Volunteers will meet in Maurice Gibb Park at 8:30 a.m. and be assigned to clean either the park or island. ECOMB is coordinating the volunteer transportation to Monument Island with Marine Patrol, Coast Guard and volunteer boat owners. The volunteers will focus primarily on the removal and proper disposal of litter. It is anticipated that over 100 volunteers from Baynanza will participate in this event. Our Neighborhood Services Department is coordinating with the Parks and Recreation, Police and Public Works Departments to provide the necessary materials and services for this project. Volunteers may register for this event at ecomb(Q>.ecomb.orQ . Should you have any additional questions or are interested in volunteering in this event, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
