Members of the City Commission
SUBJECT: PROSTITUTION - ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS ON OCEAN DRIVE
This Letter to the Commission is to advise the Mayor and City Commission of the efforts of the
Police Department with regards to prostitution on Ocean Drive.
The Police Department has been continually present on Ocean Drive in its efforts to combat
prostitution. For the period of January 1 to May 23, 2000, the Police Department has made 151
arrests for prostitution. In the last two weeks, the Police Department has made 38 prostitution arrests
in and around Ocean Drive, including two persons for "pimping".
The Police Department believes that one of the most effective long term solutions to this problem
is the "Mapping Program". The "Mapping Program" is a court order that restricts a person arrested
and convicted of prostitution from being present in a particular area. If that person enters that area,
they can be immediately arrested for trespassing. The "Mapping Program" requires the cooperation
and coordination of the Courts. The Police Department is working diligently with the Courts to
implement this program.
The Police Department is working hard to eliminate this problem on Ocean Drive and elsewhere in
the City.
