SUBJECT: OVERTIM~OS~TS ASSOCIATED WITH ELIAN GONZALEZ
This Letter to the Mayor and Commission is to appraise each of you on the overtime costs incurred
by the Miami Beach Police Department as a result of its participation in various events involving
Elian Gonzalez.
The Police Department was directly responsible for providing security both times the parties met in
Miami Beach. In addition, the City of Miami invoked our Mutual Aid Agreement and our Police
Department provided officers to assist the City of Miami Police Department on several occasions
during this time period. Below is a breakdown of the costs:
INSTANCE COST
First visit to Miami Beach $ 32,805.00
Second visit to Miami Beach $ 41,581.00
Day of the INS Seizure $ 37,147.00
Calle Ocho March $ 2,261.00
Total Overtime $113,794.00
Benefits $ 39,828.00
TOTAL COSTS $153,622.00
Part of the above costs were incurred when Miami Beach police officers worked at various Special
Events such as an NBA playoff game and three concerts. Our police officers worked these Special
Events in order to free up City of Miami police officers and it is expected that we will be reimbursed
as these were off-duty assignments. We are awaiting final word on the expectation that the City will
be reimbursed by the City of Miarni $10,066.00 (for the Special Events), leaving a projected total
cost of $143,556.00.
