LTC 221-2007 16th Street Bike LanesRFC~11~F~ 10010CT - I PM 12~ 05 m MIAMI BEACH CITY CLEf:K~s oFF~~~ OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC # 221-200 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: September 26, 2007 SUBJECT: 16th Street Bike Lanes This letter is to provide you with an update on the recent striping of bike lanes on 16tH Street. In an effort to begin immediate implementation of proposed bikeways in the Atlantic Greenway Network (AGN) Master Plan, the Public Works Department has surveyed roadways within the AGN that have sufficient pavement width to stripe bike lanes immediately. The identified roadways which can presently accommodate bike lanes are as follows: • 16th Street, Bay Road to Washington Avenue • Euclid Avenue, 5th Street to 16th Street • Prairie Avenue, 28th Street to 42"d Street • 73~d Street, Dickens Avenue to Collins Avenue A present design for 16th Street is underway which will promote traffic calming through measures such as bike lanes. In the interim, City staff has instituted ashort-term project to stripe the bike lanes which will contribute to our objective of providing alternative modes of transportation. 16th Street was designated with bike lanes due to high bicycle ridership, the directness and connectivity this road provides to bicycle traffic generators, and by the challenges that are presented to bicyclists from parallel parking. The bike lanes have been installed on both sides of the 16th Street corridor, between Bay Road and Washington Avenue, with both sides from Washington Avenue to Collins Avenue designated as bike routes. The Public Works Department will begin striping bike lanes on Prairie Avenue within the next month. Striping plans for 73~d Street are complete, and will be submitted to Miami- Dade County Public Works Department and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for approval. Once the plans are approved, striping will begin and it is estimated that by December 2007 this project will also be completed. The development of striping plans for Euclid Avenue will begin in late September. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Attachment: 1.
