RESOLUTION NO. 96-21977
RESOLUTION BY AND BETWEEN THE CITIES OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA AND RIO de JANEIRO, BRAZIL
WHEREAS, considering the ties between the cities of Miami Beach and Rio de Janeiro
stemming from the long standing friendship between Americans and Brazilians, the cultural
diversity of their communities, and the similarity of their urban conditions; and
WHEREAS, considering also the wishes of their trade industry and tourism circles,
particularly the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and the "Associacao Comercial de Rio de
Janeiro" which are equally interested in business opportunities open to their joint action; and
WHEREAS, Seymour Gelber, Mayor of the City of Miami Beach and Cesar Maia, Mayor
of the City of Rio de Janeiro have agreed to promote the sisterhood of their cities without prejudice
to similar ties with other cities and have decided that they will abide by the following understanding:
1. F oster the exchange of information and experience, including high level visits, on all
matters related to the management of their cities conforming to the principals of
reciprocity and equality; and
2. Endeavor to promote or assist in promoting cultural, artistic and tourism
exchanges with a view to enlarging the reciprocal knowledge of their activities in
all those fields; and
3. Support and encourage the cooperation and exchanges between the business circles
of their cities, particularly the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and the
"Associacao Comercial de Rio de Janeiro".
Now therefore, be it resolved, by the cities of Miami Beach and Rio de Janeiro that this agreement
will become effective after ratification by the proper authorities and will be in effect during a period
of 5 years. It will be automatically extended for another 5 years if not canceled by one of the parties
six months before the expiration.

originals, one in English and one in Portuguese both with equal validity.

ENTENDIMENTO ENTRE AS CIDADES
DE MIAMI BEACH E RIO DE JANEIRO
Considerando os layos que unem suas cida-
des no quadro da tradicional amizade entre
Americanos e Brasileiros, a diversidade
cultural de suas comunidades e a similitude
de suas condicoes urbanas, e
considerando tambem os desejos de seus
circulos comerciais, industriais e turisticos,
particularmente a Camara de Comercio de
Miami Beach e a Associayao Comercial do
Rio de Janeiro, que estao igualmente inte-
ressados nas oportunidades de neg6cios
abertas a sua acao conjunta,
Seymour Gelber, Prefeito de Miami Beach,
e Cesar Maia, Prefeito da Cidade do Rio de
Janeiro,
decidiram promover a irmanayao de suas
cidades, sem prejuizo de layos similares
com outras cidades, e decidiram entremen-
tes observar 0 seguinte entendimento:
I. estimularao a troca de informayoes e
experiencia, inclusive com visitas de alto
nivel, em todas materias relacionadas com
a gestao de suas cidades;
