96-21985 RESO RESOLUTION NUMBER 96-21985 A RESOLUTION OF THE MA VOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE ADMINISTRATION TO APPL V FOR U. S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE GRANT FUNDS FOR WILDLIFE AND SPORT FISH RESTORATION PROGRAMS ON AND IN THE WATERS OFF OF MIAMI BEACH. WHEREAS, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service has issued a Call for Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program Grant Applications for Fiscal Year 1996-1997; and WHEREAS, Federal funding for wildlife habitat restoration projects could potentially be utilized to augment the work proposed under the City's Parks Renovation Master Plan; and WHEREAS, Federal funding for wildlife habitat restoration projects could potentially also be used to enhance the City's golf course and rights-of-way; and WHEREAS, the grants funding could also be used to create additional artificial reefs which provide important marine habitat, storm surge protection and benefit the City's sportfishing and diving businesses, which are important components of the City's tourism industry. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission herein authorize the Administration to apply for funding for Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Programs under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Grant Program. DATE: May 15, 1996 TO: SUBJECT: ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION Approve the resolution. BACKGROUND The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service has issued a Call for Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program Grant Applications. The application deadline is June 1, 1996. The major funding categories include management, education, public awareness, research and administration. While the applicability of the specific grant program is still being evaluated, the Administration plans to submit applications under several categories in an effort to secure funding which could be used to augment the work proposed under our Parks Renovation Master Plan or to enhance the City's Golf Course and Right-of-Way properties. Grant funds may also be requested to create additional artificial reefs in the waters off Miami Beach which would provide important marine habitat, storm surge protection and benefit our sportfishing and diving businesses, which are important components of our tourism industry. CONCLUSION The City Commission should hereby authorize the administration to apply for funding for Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Programs under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Grant Program.
