RESOLUTION NO. 2001-24255
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE SELECTION OF
A DECORATIVE TILE DESIGN, AS RECOMMENDED BY THE ART IN
PUBLIC PLACES COMMITTEE, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE
COLLINS PARK CULTURAL CENTER TENANTS, INCLUDING THE
BASS MUSEUM, THE MIAMI CITY BALLET, AND THE MIAMI-DADE
PUBLIC LIBRARY; WITH THE DESIGN FEE, IN THE AMOUNT OF
$1,500, TO BE FUNDED BY THE ART IN PUBLIC PLACES FUND 147.
WHEREAS, when complete, the Collins Park Cultural Center will be a focal point for the
City's cultural facilities, and every effort is being made to create important architectural and
design statements throughout this project; and
WHEREAS, decorative tiles for the sidewalks were proposed by the architect and
submitted to the Art in Public Places for review; and
WHEREAS, the Art in Public Places Committee assembled a professional advisory
committee composed of representatives from the Collins Cultural Park Center tenants to review
submissions; and
WHEREAS, when the tiles are embedded in the sidewalks, they will serve to visually
identify the Collins Park Cultural Center facilities, including the Bass Museum, the Miami-Dade
Public Library, and the Miami City Ballet; and
WHEREAS, the decorative tile design by Cosmyk Images was selected; and
WHEREAS, the design fee of $1,500 will be funded by the Art in Public Places Fund 147;
and
WHEREAS, approval of this Resolution will enable the architect to proceed with the
Collins Park Cultural Center sidewalk plan, including the Cosmyk Images tile design
recommended herein.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission herein approve the selection of a decorative tile design, as recommended by the Art
in Public Places Committee, in collaboration with the Collins Park Cultural Center tenants,
including the Bass Museum, the Miami City Ballet, and the Miami-Dade Public Library; with the
design fee, in the amount of $1500, to be funded by the Art in Public Places Fund 147.

ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt the Resolution.
ANALYSIS:
When construction is complete, the Collins Park Cultural Center will be a focal point for the
City's cultural facilities. As such, every effort is being made to create important architectural and
design statements throughout the project.
An element of this artistic expression is the design of decorative tiles to be placed in the project
sidewalks. To facilitate this work, Robert A.M. Stern, Architect submitted decorative tile
designs to the Collins Park Oversight Committee for review. These designs were not
recommended by the Art in Public Places Committee ("APPC") which once consulted, conferred
with the tenants, and created a graphic design competition for the decorative tiles. That
competition has yielded the desired tiles. When these decorative tiles are imbedded in the
sidewalks, they will serve to visually identify the Collins Park Cultural Center facilities; the Bass
Museum, the Miami-Dade Public Library and the Miami City Ballet.
The APPC assembled a Professional Advisory Committee composed of representatives from the
Collins Park Cultural Center tenants. Five designs were submitted to the committee for review.
The decorative tile design by Cosmyk Images was selected (See Attachment "A"). The $1,500
design fee will be funded by Art in Public Places. Manufacture and installation will be paid by
the sidewalk contractor, Homestead Paving. The Administration recommends the adoption of this
Resolution and the installation of the Committee's tile selection.
