SUBJECT: Vehicle Extrication Training - February 28, 2017 - March 5, 2017
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to inform the Mayor and Commission that
the Fire Department will be conducting a Vehicle Extrication Training beginning February
28, 2017 through March 5, 2017.
One of the most complex, demanding, and often time-consuming situation a firefighter
can face is removing a trapped victim from the tangled wreckage of an automobile
accident. Last year, the Fire Department responded to 974 motor vehicle accidents with
645 injuries. Today's vehicles are designed with greater safety features than in the past.
Therefore, the Fire Department Training Division is requesting to use the fenced in area
(Lifeguard Station) located on 79th and Collins to conduct their 4th annual department
wide extrication training.
The Fire Department has the funding and cars to conduct one (1) annual training but, not
a location except this area that is fenced. The department usually gets 20 cars at
approximately $5,000. The cars are parked in a perimeter area in an organized fashion,
conduct a training session with 3-4 cars a day and the tow company retrieves the car at
the end of the day. The department uses a backhoe to create intrusions to make it as
realistic as possible. At the end of each training session, the area is cleaned and ready
for use the next training day.
Last year, less than six percent (6%) of the calls handled by our Fire Department lasted
more than an hour. This efficiency can only happen with consistent vehicle machinery
training.
