SUBJECT: HEALTHY SELFIE CONTEST W NER
The purpose of this LTC is to notify the Mayor and City Commission of the recent
accomplishment of Parks and Recreation team member Maria Araujo and North Shore
Park and Youth Center Afterschool participant Sabrina DeCastro.
As part of The Children's Trust grant awarded yearly to the North Shore Park and Youth
Center, the Center collaborates with FLIPANY(Florida Introduces Physical Activity and
Nutrition to Youth) to provide afterschool and summer camp participants with delicious
and nutritious snacks and meals to eat. FLIPANY's mission is to empower youth and
their families through physical activity and nutrition education programs while raising
awareness and creating policies for a healthier community. During the 2016 Fall/Winter
season, the North Shore Park and Youth Center participated in a pilot collaboration
between FLIPANY and KickinNutrition.TV, which brings an innovative technological
approach to teaching children about healthier food choices and lifestyles.
KickinNutrition.TV features videos and interactive learning tools utilizing a series of
videos and presentations with current music and peer-to-peer nutrition instruction to
encourage children to make healthier nutritional choices.
Led by Recreation Leader I Maria Araujo as the program leader, Sabrina DeCastro, an
Afterschool participant from the North Shore Park Youth Center was the student winner
for the promoting #HealthySelfie2016 contest hosted by KickinNutrition.TV. The North
Shore Park and Youth Center's high level of student engagement in the contest and
program helped guarantee a win for the home team and nutrition. Proceeds from the
winnings will be put back into the Afterschool Cooking Club program at the North Shore
Park and Youth Center.
