SUBJECT: Commemorative Tree Kick Off
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you of the upcoming
Commemorative Tree Program Kick -Off. The event is scheduled for Sunday, February 26,
2017, from 9 AM — 1 PM at the Scott Rakow Center (2700 Sheridan Ave).
In collaboration with the University of Florida — Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF
IFAS) as well as several City Departments (Parks and Recreations, Public Works - Greenspace,
and Communications) the Environment and Sustainability Department will hold a day filled with
various activities to celebrate the City's Commemorative Tree Program and our natural
environment. The program, which was initiated in December 2016, provides residents and visitors
the opportunity to plant a tree in commemoration of a special event, memory, or loved one.

The schedule for the day will begin with a free tree
giveaway for Miami Beach residents. Tree species will
include Jamaican Caper, Gumbo Limbo, amongst many
others. For residents that do not have a yard, small
apartment/condo plants will also be distributed. As part of
the giveaway, the Greenspace Division will provide
residents one-on-one trainings on how to properly plant
trees in their yard and maintain them.
This will be followed by an announcement to the community on the establishment of the
Commemorative Tree Program and will include information on how the program works, how
residents and visitors can participate, as well as in-depth information on the species that are
available through this program.
Additionally, UF -IFAS will hold a workshop on Florida Friendly Native Species and explain their
contribution on reducing water and pesticide use. Alongside this workshop, a children's painting
activity will be led by Parks and Recreation to engage and educate the younger residents.
We look forward to having a successful event and hope to see everyone there.
