SUBJECT: Human Trafficking Task Force f the Miami -Dade County
State Attorney's Office
This Letter to Commission is prepared to advise the Mayor and Commission that the
Police Department has decided to commit a second full -time member, a sergeant, to the
H uman Trafficking Task Force of the Miami -Dade County State Attorney's Office.
Dyer a year ago, the Commission requested that a MBPD detective be assigned to the
H uman Trafficking Task Force. The detective's presence has had a significant positive
impact on the State Attorney Office's ability to interdict prostitution and human trafficking
irr Miami Beach and the County. Based on our experience with the Task Force in the
past 18 months, and after assessing our crime patterns and challenges with prostitution
and human trafficking on Miami Beach, the Police Chief and I have concluded that the
Task Force is the most effective tool to address these issues.
The State Attorney's Office needed, in particular, supervisory help in the Task Force.
The Police Chief has chosen a veteran detective sergeant with significant investigative
eNpertise and a record of success in rescuing underage women who have been
victimized. The sergeant's position will be funded with existing resources. The Police
G hief and I believe this investment of an additional, talented supervisor will ultimately
have a direct impact on crime on Miami Beach and will help reduce human trafficking
and victimization in our City and the County.
