Engineer Stantec Consulting Services Inc., Coral Gables Contractor CSR Heavy Construction, Deerfield Beach After several years of heavy use, the Flamingo Park Memorial Football Field and Track was in poor condition. It suffered from cracked and uneven track lanes, dips and holes on the grass field, drainage problems, an old lighting system and inaccessibility issues. With $2.4 million in renovations, the facility field and track have become world-class facilities. Funding for the improvements came from resort and development taxes and parks and recreation bonds. The Parks and Recreation Department collaborated with area residents, neighborhood organizations and other City departments during the planning and renovation process. The new facility, opened in September 2013, features a renovated bleacher building that meets ADA standards. Other changes include updated seating, a press box with a state- of-the-art public address system, restrooms and a concession stand. The installation of artificial turf and field drainage has allowed the field to accommodate both football and soccer games, and the surface of the eight-lane running track can withstand bicycles and rollerblades. There is also an updated sports lighting system. Players from recreational programs, high schools, civic leagues and charitable teams keep the field and track busy 12 months a year.
