On February 27, 2017 I advised the Commission of several steps the administration is undertaking to enhance outreach and engagement on sea level rise, flooding and stormwater investments. This event will unveil several new tools to better dialogue with residents and business owners. We look forward to learning also from this new format in community engagement. SCIENCE & SCENARIOS Coastal Risk Consulting is a local firm of scientists and engineers that understand our unique vulnerabilities to sea level rise and climate change. They have developed several Miami Beach prototypes to help visualize and understand flood risk over time. Spend some time chatting with them to find which prototype most closely matches your home. Bring your elevation certificate! AECOM'S ADAPTATION CALCULATOR At the city's request AECOM has developed a simple tool to help us all understand elevation- in layman's terms. You can find out the height of the new storm drain inlets and the road. You can see how the improved drainage system is designed to handle more water in the event of a storm — all in simple inches. ENGINEERS AT WORK Meet with the city's Assistant City Manager for Public Works and the Director of Capital Improvement Projects. Learn how the work will be done, how long it will take and how to harmonize the new work with your personal property. THE MYSTERIES OF FLOOD INSURANCE Meet the city's Floodplain Manager whose job is to implement ordinances and policies to prevent flood damage. He guides the Community Rating Program—saving residents and businesses on insurance premiums $b million annually. Along with our Deputy Chief Resilience Officer, they have been working with FEMA to sort through your many questions about flood insurance. This is a complex matter as you know.
