SUBJECT: CITY SELECTED TO RECEIVE $3 MIL ION GRANT AWARD FOR THE MIAMI BEACH
ATLANTIC GREENWAY
We are pleased to advise the Mayor and the City Commission that the City has been selected to
receive a grant in the amount of $3 million from the Florida Department of Transportation
(FDOT) through the Shared Use Nonmotorized (SUN) Trail program. The SUN Trail Network
was established during the 2015 legislative session and is authorized under Section 339.81, of
the Florida Statutes. Funding for this project has been programmed into FDOT's 5 -Year
Transportation Plan, and is available starting July 2017.
The $3 million grant funds will be used for the construction of the Miami Beach Atlantic
Greenway from South Pointe Park to 87th Terrace. Once completed, the corridor will serve as
an uninterrupted paved, multi -use trail for pedestrians and non -motorized vehicles, which will
promote alternative transportation methods. It will extend in a north/south direction, mostly
running between the erosion control line and the dune system and will connect users to South
Pointe Park, Lummus Park, 36th Street Park, the Indian Beach Park, Allison Park, and North
Shore Open Space Park, as well as to private residences, businesses, and other facilities. This
project will provide safer opportunities for bicyclists and pedestrians. A map of the Miami Beach
Atlantic Greenway Corridor (Beachwalk and Ba alk Segments) is attached.
