Completely describe Project approved by the Grants Panel and in a separate narrative detail all revisions to the Pro/ect based upon the City Commission approved award. Please be as specific as possible; name of event, specific dates, venues, times, artists, etc. Use extra page if necessary. Project description as approved by Grants Panel: Funds were requested to support the dance concert titled Two Worlds, featuring selected repertory by Artistic Director Augusto Soledade of Brazz Dance Theater, and Miami-based artist Letty Bassart that has never before been presented in Miami Beach. Two Worlds will be presented at the Byron Carlyle Theater on June 5 and June 6, 2009 at $:OOpm. Brazz Dance Theater is a professional company that presents a fusion of traditional Afro-Brazilian and contemporary dance. The work of Miami-based choreographer Augusta Soledade has been acknowledged locally and state-wide through the 2006 Dance Miami Choreographer's Fellowship and the 2007 Individual Artist Fellowship. In addition, Brazz Dance Theater has been granted funds for past performance and educational programs from Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Council, the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, the Dade Community Foundation, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, and the Target Corporation. The company is composed of Miami-based professional dancers. Our target audience is the general public; we feel, however, that our work has strong appeal to the Brazilian community in South Florida. Letty Bassart is an independent choreographer whose work is driven by a reverence for human experience and an obsession for the telling details. Ms. Bassart's solo work has been performed throughout e south Florida and at Dance Theatre Workshop in New York City. She was awarded the 2007 Dance Nfiami Choreographer's Fellowship which is being applied to the development of a new work, Salt, to be presented in 1viay of 2008. As a first generation American and native to Miami, Letty Bassart's work originates from a "fish out of water" perspective. Ms. Bassart considers movement and narration to be her constant compass. Each piece contains an original vocabulary. Her choreographic work has been described as such: "painstakingly crafted movement and text form the legs of her pieces. These legs are then asked to run marathons; jump hurdles; and exhaust the possibilities." Project Details: Our concert at the Byron Carlyle Theater will feature works selected from the following repertory and may include new dance works. Current Brazz Dance Theater repertory: Altars (2006), which premiered in 2006 at Florida International University in Sweetwater, FL, considers and abstracts aspects of the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomble in order to comment on divine presence in religious rituals and daily life. Soledade juxtaposes his Afro-Fusion aesthetic with the Cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach with the intention of bringing together the spiritual sense of two distinct worlds. This work was made possible in part by the 2006 Dance Miami Choreographer's Fellowship. The Diaries of an Outlaw (2004) is inspired by the life of the legendary outlaw Maria Bonita of Brazil, and explores the union of the personal and the universal nature of human relationships. As in much of Soledade's repertory, the blend of dance styles found in Diaries yields a work that is at once athletic and nuanced, both percussive and fluid, as it captures the rhythms of the outlaw life. Some Things Revealed (2007) was commissioned by Tampa-based Moving Current Dance 6of12 Company. In a spirit of experimentation, the work was created to combine Soledade's Afro-Fusion aesthetic with the fluid movement of Moving Current. In the coming together of these distinct idioms, a dialogue is established that reveals possibilities, commonalities, and an appreciation for spontaneous interactions, while promoting a deeper understanding of one another. 4xowusi (2003) is based on a Brazilian fable for children written by Pierre Fatumbi Verger. Thy work uses traditional Afro-Brazilian movement along with original poetry and music to tell the story of Oxowusi, a mighty hunter who saves his village from a monstrous bird with a single arrow. Inspiraciones Melancolicas (1999) is a solo work that articulates the blending of Soledade's Afro-Brazilian background with contemporary dance forms. Set to "Porgi Amore" by Mozart, the movement presents contrasts with the classical structure of Mozart's music. Guest Artist Letty Bassart will present excerpts from Flower Chronicles and/or new solo work. Flower Chronicles is a duet that tells the story of (not about) the movers, the space and 17 yellow cups. It began with the exploration of three words, thirst, fragility, and endurance. This full-length work opens with "the first time I missed a train I learned that missed opportunities taste like watery hot chocolate axid closes with "other trains come and grottos are always filled with candlelight."
