SUBJECT: America Recycles Day

The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and City Commission with information
regarding the City events that will mark the celebration of America Recycles Day on Saturday,
November 15tH
The Sustainability Committee, in coordination with the Environmental Resource Management
and Sanitation Divisions of Public Works, will be hosting America Recycles Day. On Saturday,
November 15tH between 12PM and 6PM, representatives from the recycling industry, non-profit
environmental organizations, and volunteers from the City's Sustainability Committee will join
the Environmental Resources Management Division staff at tables that will be located at Euclid
Circle on Lincoln Road (please see attached site plan). Waste Management Inc., will provide
information about the new single-stream recycling program the County will begin in early 2009.
SIR International Corp., an electronic waste (e-waste} recycler, will provide information about
the environmental benefits of recycling electronic materials. The non-profit organization ECOMB
will educate the public on the role of the community in recycling and the benefits recycling offers
to the health of our local environment. The Surfrider Foundation will provide educational
materials related to the protection of our beach and waterway resources. The Sustainability
Committee volunteers and Environmental Division staff will provide educational materials about
the City's recycling efforts, including the development of a pilot program for recycling in the
Right-of-Way areas.
In addition to the educational tables at Lincoln Road, the Sanitation Division in cooperation with
Waste Management and SIR International will provide recycling drop off points at 75th Street &
Dickens Avenue in North Beach and at 6th Street between Meridian & Jefferson Avenues in
South Beach. Residents can drop off electronics and commingled recyclables (office paper,
magazines, cardboard, newspaper, plastic, metal, glass) at both of these two locations during
the event times.
On Tuesday, October 28tH, the City presented the America Recycles Day event proposal and
site plan to the Lincoln Road Marketing Association, which expressed support of the event and
of recycling in Miami Beach. America Recycles Day has also been advertised on the City
website and distributed through a press release.
