A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE
CITY MANAGER AND CITY CLERK TO EXECUTE AN
AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY, ON BEHALF OF THE
MIAMI BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND THE BOARD OF
TRUSTEES OF FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY TO
PARTICIPATE IN A VOLUNTEER STUDENT INTERNSHIP
PROGRAM TO ASSIST THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS
UNIT VICTIMS ADVOCATE OFFICE.
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach Police Department encourages community
outreach in providing public safety and law enforcement learning experience
opportunities for students through structured volunteer student internships; and
WHEREAS, Florida State University has an established internship program
which works with law enforcement agencies to expose students to actual law
enforcement experiences, and has requested the Miami Beach Police Department's
participation in its internship program;
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach Police Department, Criminal Investigations Unit,
Victim's Advocate Office, will be the primary entity to work with the internship program
student volunteer, who will assist detectives, police officers, the public, and victims of
crimes; and
WHEREAS, this internship program will commence on January 1, 2009 and
continue through December 31, 2009; student interns participating in this program agree
to abide by applicable Miami Beach Police Department rules; and
WHEREAS, student interns who participate in this internship program will
participate without compensation from the City and/or the Police Department, and at no
time shall they be deemed to be employees, contractors, and/or agents of the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the City Manager and
City Clerk are authorized to execute the attached Agreement between the City, on behalf
of the Miami Beach Police Department, and the Board of Trustees of Florida State
University to participate in a Volunteer Student Internship Program to assist the Criminal
Investigations Unit Victims Advocate Office.

Item Summa /Recommendation:
In an effort to enrich students attending Florida State University the Board of Trustees has requested the
Miami Beach Police Department's participation in a volunteer internship program. This program requires
the Miami Beach Police Department to execute an agreement with the Board of Trustees of Florida State
University to guide and direct a work relationship to assist the Criminal Investigations Unit Victims
Advocate Office. The volunteer students participating in this internship program will assist our victim
advocates, detectives, officers, the public, and victims of crimes. The internship program will begin
January 1, 2009 and continue until December 31, 2009 and is a requirement towards the students
receiving a degree in social work. Student interns who participate in this internship program will do so
without compensation from the Miami Beach Police Department, and at no time shall they be deemed to
be employees, contractors, and or agents of the City of Miami Beach.
The Miami Beach Police Department encourages community outreach in providing public safety and law
enforcement learning experience opportunities for student through structured volunteer student internships
and wishes to participate in this endeavor.
