OFFICE OF iHt CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 296-2008 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Matti H. Bower and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager ~~/~
DATE: November 14, 2008 ~ ~ ~)
SUBJECT: People's Transportation Plan (PTP)~S'ummit
Miami-Dade County is hosting a People's Transportation Plan (PTP) Summit on Saturday, November 15,
2008 from 8:30am to 2:OOpm at the Convention Center at the Miami Mart Airport Hotel (see attached flyer).
The accomplishments and future challenges of the People's Transportation Plan (PTP) program will be
discussed, and input from attendees will be solicited.
City staff will attend the PTP Summit to provide information on the City's transportation and transit efforts.
The status of the Coastal Communities Transportation Master Plan and Transit Study will be discussed.
The City has already engaged in discussion with MDT to begin the first steps of what will be the iniegration
and consolidation of existing routes to create a Middle Beach and North Beach circulation. This
undertaking would result in operational savings which the City of Miami Beach would like see into the
implementation of these local circulars.
Currently, PTP funds support the operations and maintenance of the South Beach Local Bus Circulator
(with an annual ridership of 2.5 million), roadway and sidewalk improvements, bridge improvements,
bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and pedestrian traffic signal improvements. In the long term, these funds
will also support several major future transit projects in Miami Beach, such as the North Beach and Middle
Beach Local Bus Circulators and the South, Middle and North Beach Transit Centers. These funds are
also programmed for implementing the City's Atlantic Greenway Network Master Plan, which is critical for
improving the safety of bicyclists in the City. These projects are pivotal in the City's efforts to address
transit as a viable transportation option in a City that has no space for conventional transportation
improvements.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
